The Energy We Carry

Stephanie Wheelahan | DEC 1, 2025

As we step into December, I keep coming back to the way our energy rises and falls throughout the day. Some mornings I wake up steady and clear. Other days I feel scattered or heavy for no obvious reason. There was a time when I tried to push through it all, but one of the greatest lessons of my healing journey has been learning to listen. As Maya Angelou said, “When you know better, you do better.” Understanding our own energy will change everything.

In yoga philosophy, the gunas describe these states. Sattva is clarity and calm. Rajas is movement and intensity. Tamas is heaviness and stillness. We move through all three every single day. None of them are wrong. They are simply information, like the weather within us.

December is a month where many of us feel all three gunas tugging at us at once. There is the bright excitement of the season, the long to-do lists, and the natural pull toward rest as the light around us fades a little earlier each night. In my own life, especially in early sobriety and during the years of untangling myself from old patterns and unhealthy relationships, I used to interpret these shifts in energy as “good” or “bad.” Now I see them as guides.

Some days my body needs grounding. Some days I crave heat and strength. Some days I need softness so I can meet myself without judgment. As Rumi wrote, “There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen.” That voice is what helps us choose the right practice for the energy we're in, instead of forcing ourselves into what we think we should feel.

This month, we invite you to pay attention to your energy with the same tenderness you would offer a friend. Notice your inner weather. Notice what kind of movement helps you return to yourself. Sculpt and strength classes might give you the fire you need on days you feel stuck. Slow Flow & Restore might be the medicine for days when life feels too loud. Variety is not a luxury. It is how we support the whole self.

The more we understand our energy, the easier it becomes to balance it. The truth is that balance is not a perfect still point. It is a conversation with yourself. A back and forth. A practice.

So as we move through December, let this be a month of choosing what you need, moment by moment. Let it be a month of honoring the energy you’re in and trusting your own rhythm. Let it be a month of coming home to yourself.
